If you've been searching for couples therapy, you've probably seen the term “Gottman Method” come up again and again. But what does it actually mean — and why do so many therapists and couples consider it the gold standard in relationship counseling?
As a Gottman Level 3 Trained therapist, I use this approach every day with couples in Aventura and throughout South Florida. Here's what you should know.
It's Based on Decades of Real Research
The Gottman Method was developed by Drs. John and Julie Gottman after studying thousands of couples over 40 years. Unlike many approaches that are purely theoretical, the Gottman Method is grounded in direct observation of how couples actually interact — what they say, how they say it, and even how their bodies respond during conflict.
This research identified specific patterns that predict whether a relationship will thrive or break down. The most well-known findings include the “Four Horsemen” — criticism, contempt, defensiveness, and stonewalling — four communication habits that, when left unaddressed, can quietly destroy even the most loving relationship.
What Happens in a Gottman Session?
The process begins with a thorough assessment. I take time to understand your relationship history, your strengths as a couple, and the specific patterns that are getting in your way. From there, we build a customized plan together.
Sessions focus on practical, learnable skills — not just talking about problems, but actually building new ways of connecting. You'll learn how to:
- Turn toward each other instead of away during moments of stress
- Repair conversations before they escalate
- Deepen friendship and emotional intimacy
- Navigate conflict without contempt or shutdown
- Build shared meaning and goals for your life together
Who Is It For?
The Gottman Method works for couples at every stage — whether you are newly engaged and want to start on solid ground, or you've been married for 20 years and feel like you've lost your way. It's also effective for couples dealing with infidelity, life transitions, parenting stress, and communication breakdowns.
Services are available in English and Spanish.
